District 9 Overview |
The Fire District was formed under the authority of K.S.A. 19-3601 et seq., by the County Copmmissioners, in 1961, and given the name "Union Township Fire District #9" (later changed to "Jefferson County Fire District #9"). Land was purchased and a fire station was built at 104 W. Lucy St. in McLouth. We started with two vehicles housed in a small 2 bay concrete block station. The station was so small that the vehicles, on occasion, had to be moved outside to accomodate membership meetings. In 1964 residents in parts of Alexandria Township and Tonganoxie Township petitioned into Fire District 9, as there were no fire districts in those areas of Leavenworth County at that time. As time went on, more vehicles were added to the fleet, and more space added to the station. Today we have 11 vehicles in the fleet and a station of around 8,000 square feet, encompassing 11 truck bays and a meeting room. The Fire District is about 76 square miles in area and contains a population around 2900. We protect about $15,000,000.00 in properties. |
